Endangered Species Lesson

Lesson: Endangered Species 5th Grade

Objectives:
1.Students will learn the concept of Endangered Species
2. Students will develop skills needed to use presentation software to present reports

Materials
Hardware- Computers, Internet access, LCD projector
Software- mPower or Power Point, word processing program, graph/chart program

Procedure
1.Students will research and select an endangered species using the Library and Internet
2. Students will use the Endangered Species Chart to organizer and develop content
3.Students will be given direct instruction in the use of the designated software
4. Students will be given a specific outline/rubric of the assignment
5. Students will present slideshows to peers and faculty

Multiple Intelligence Component

Verbal- Students will research an endangered species, write a minimum of 10 facts about the chosen species in the slide show, students will have an option to read aloud the slideshow presentation. Logical- Students will display a chart/graph or other statistical data regarding the chosen species. Visual-Students will use pictures and graphics from the Internet to share information on the species. Musical- Students will incorporate background music and sounds of the species and/or habitat to enhance the slideshow presentation. Interpersonal- Students will be given opportunities to share/exchange information and ideas for the slideshow projects. Intrapersonal- Students will be given time for independent research and reflection on endangered species. Kinesthetic- Students will be using computers and a projector to present the slideshows. Naturalist-Students will include basic facts of the species habitat and existing or potential threats to the species. Existentialist- Students will provide a brief consideration regarding the rights/responsibilities of protecting the endangered species.

Lesson Assessment

Assessment scale: The slideshow presentation will meet the following criteria
A. Accurately reflects subject matter- facts are accurate; graphics/sound support information
B. Communicates information clearly-main idea presented, purpose clear
C. Material well-developed and organized-logical progression of material
D. Reflects technology competence-slides have clear/readable fonts, appropriate graphics/sound


Rubric:
4. Fully accomplishes the purpose of the slideshow; exceeds requirements
3. Adequately accomplishes the purpose of the slideshow; meets requirements
2. Partially accomplishes the purpose of the slideshow; meets
limited requirements; needs revision
1. Little or no progress in accomplishing the purpose of the slideshow;
meets no requirements; needs to restart
