Advanced Organizers

View
Advanced organizers have been an essential component in my personal education experiences from early 1970, the onset of my college education, throughout twenty plus years of teaching, and continuing today. As a strong visual learner, the numerous variations of advanced organizers have assisted my efforts to assimilate new information, and maintain clarity and organization of my thought processes. I have also found use of advanced organizers to be meaningful components of any teaching activity.

Focus on the use of advanced organizers in education stems from cognitive processing theories. David Ausubel, an educational theorist, has been instrumental in promoting the concept that organization of material and active preparation and participation of the learner will have a significant impact on the learning process.

In the field of education, there are various models stemming from the theory of cognitive learning that are designed to support the learner to organize and retain information.
These methods include the use of: mnumonics, to memorize material, scientific inquiry as is implemented in experimental activities, and a broad range of advanced organizers.

1. Dr. Richard E. Mayer, of the University of Santa Barbara has conducted extensive research in cognitive and perceptual sciences. Of particular interest is his research and findings on cognitive learning as it fuses with technology. A link to his work can be found at: http://www.psych.ucsb.edu/fac/mayer.htm

1. The Instructional Technology Program at George Mason University displays a site with an excellent overview of Behaviorism, Cognitism, and Constructivism specifically as these theories impact the use of technology in education. Within the Instructional/Learning Strategies for Cognitism there are numerous links including Ausubels work on advanced organizers. This site is worth noting:
